Contents.Gameplay The game is a where the player controls a dynasty from 1066 to 1453, though the The Old Gods and Charlemagne allow for earlier start dates of 867 and 769, respectively. Through the strategic use of war, marriages and assassinations among many other things, the player works to achieve success for their dynasty. The game contains numerous historical figures such as, and, but allows for the player to choose less significant figures such as minor and, and creation of entirely new characters with the use of the 'Ruler Designer'.Success is defined solely by the player. The only in-game objective is to obtain as many prestige and piety points as possible in order to surpass the various historically relevant European in a prestige ranking (the three most prestigious ones being the, the and the dynasties). The game ends when the player's current dies without an of the same dynasty to succeed him/her, when all landed titles of the count rank or above are stripped from all members of the player's dynasty (including themselves), or when the game reaches its end in.The game employs a and system where will inherit many traits, and skills from their. This adds an additional layer of strategy to, such that a player will attempt not only to form beneficial, but also to select marriage partners with strong traits to maximise the quality of and thus strengthen the dynasty.
This requires balancing sometimes conflicting interests. For example, while one possible marriage might allow some to be formed with another ruler, it may also require marrying a with some undesirable traits. Such a trade-off can occur in the reverse as well: one possible spouse could possess highly desirable traits but yield no new alliances for the player's dynasty. While the player can choose any noble with at least a in their possession to play as, there are some that are unplayable without the game. When the consequences are so human they mean all the much more and this is probably the most human strategy game I’ve ever played. If it doesn’t wind up being among my very favourite games of the year, spectacular things will occur in the next ten months. Plunkett, Luke (4 January 2013).

I just never let the tribal army go away, by continually declaring war.At that point, I just raised a new tribal army whenever my prestige exceeded 500 prestige. Most of the holy sites for the African faith are in North Africa, so I just conquered those provinces, and I won ten county conquests, making moral authority 50%.nice, I am going to give it a try, never considered doing it that way:). Originally posted by:Tribal armies and holy orders are both overpowered unless you are facing empire level opponents, which you likely will be soon. I think you'll find that the Abbasid empire has way more than 8000 troops and Africa and Mauretania are both part of its de jure territory so you can be expecting some action. It also frequently likes to launch an invasion of Andalusia.True, however at this stage, I moved all of my personal demense to southern Hispania, in place of tribal holdings in Africa.

Consequently, this gives me a lot of money, enough for me to generate a 6000 man retinue and still be the richest ruler. At the moment the Abbasids do have more men however, but with a 14,000 man army that I don't need to dismiss to declare war, I feel as though I could defeat much of the Abbasid army before they reach maximum morale/size. I do think you could beat Abbasids if they try to invade you but that is more a matter of the logic of the AI than it is about your holy order being overpowered. I would bet that Abbasids have at least around 30k-40k troops which is more than enough to kill off an 8k holy order, but the way the AI attacks Andelusia is quite poor. When it attacks it will split up units and send some of them by boat that you can beat easily then you can use your own boats move the bulk of your armies around quickly to ambush the weakest points of the armies coming on foot. The cpu doesn't use enough boats to make a potent invasion via water and doesn't hold armies just off shore waiting to ambush you if you dare to fight it on land next to the water. The AI also doesn't realize you will ambush a unit that is advancing until it moves right next to you and realizes that you have a lot more units than it. It tries to run back and get more but its too late at that point because you ambush it where it cannot leave the square as quickly as you can enter it. You are also smart enough to deploy armies in the county the ai is coming from just the day before he arrives to reinforce and overpower you in the neghboring county so even though he has enough armies that he could outnumber you they don't get in the same square at the same time and you easily destroy them while they are divided. What's really powerful about the West African holy order in particular is the +50% defense bonus while in territory of the same religion.
It effectively means any given army can take on much larger armies and still win with minimal casualties. It is also quite a large holy order, but a lot of those are weaker troops like light infantry, which makes them great for raiding but not so hot in battles. To me this is more 'reformed pagans are overpowerd', but by the end of the game feudal levies are going to be massive due to high technology buildings all over the place and most holy orders become quite supplementary. Doing my own campaign and i have to say Charlemagn start date puts it on easy mode fighting all those fractured muslim territorys to the north. By he time you have mauretania now you can hold off againsted the umayadds if you can get 1k prestige.
And once you get the Sprit guardians holy moely they wreck house especially in defence.I'd agree with saying the Charlemagne start is easier, however the difficulty comes from fighting the other large empires. At the moment its around 830, and I have completely conquered Britannia and Hispania, and have placed the moral authority at 0%, however both of Francia and the Abbasid are completely stable, something with the Old Gods start lacks.
You can indeed vassalize holy orders. To do so, they need to not hold any land other than baronies (so if the Templars won a crusade and were given the kingdom of Hungary, for example, they could no longer be vassalized until they lost all that land). You usually have to give them some land inside your de jure primary title so that you'll be their de jure liege (you can revoke the county later if you want). If you are a king rank, then the leader of the order also has to be the same culture as you. All holy orders are culture locked, so if a character who isn't German becomes Grandmaster of the Teutonic Knights, for example, his culture will change to German, so the culture you have to be to vassalize particular orders as a king is always the same. A brief list:Templars - FrenchHospitallers - OccitanTeutonic - GermanSantiago/Calatrava - CastillanBektashi/Hashashin - PersianJomsvikings - NorseEmperors can vassalize holy orders of the same religion using the above method irrespective of culture, so it's actually possible for a Catholic Empire to have all the Catholic holy orders as vassals. However, holy orders of the wrong culture will still get a foreigner penalty towards their liege and I believe (unlike most titles) they can actually rebel even if they only have baronies.
I could be wrong though, I just remember that happening to me a few patches back.As for mercnearies. They cannot normally be vassalized. A few mercenary companies start the game as vassals to particular rulers in certain historical bookmarks, and the Byzantine Emperor can create the Varangian Guard using a decision.Either of these cases is very, very powerful as it gives you the ability to hire them at extremely low cost.
A handy tip I've always found particularly useful when playing as the Byzantines is the emergence of the Holy Order of the Sephulcre when you reconquer Jerusalem as a See of the Pentarchy. They form almost immediately and provide any ruler with enough piety and gold a stack of 7150 elite troops. Now, as stated beforehand by other people, Holy Orders usually gain control of minor baronies and I always try to get my dynasty in charge of a Holy Order whenever possible. You should find it easy to vassalise a holy order if;A) they own land in the de-jure part of your kingdom/Empire.B) The leader is of your dynasty.Or C) You grant them a duchy title (not always the case though) - the leader will love you and therefore accept vassalisation.Of course, another boon of having the Holy Order of the Sephulcre vassalised as a Byzantine ruler, is that any land they own will count as being owned by your Empire, therefore negating the potential need to Expel them from your realm in order to reform the Roman Empire.
. In 1 of your counties, have a barony that you also control. Or just revoke the title from the current baron if you can, but that can be a little problematic. Grant that barony to the Holy order.
Crusader Kings 2 Holy Orders Excommunicated
Check who is the heir for the holy order, invite him to your court. After he accepts, grant him a county (you might be able to do it with a barony, city or w.e, but I just did it with a county and I'm 100% it works that way, can't tell for sure if granting him a barony only would work). That guy will have a claim on the order.
Declare war on the holy order to press the claim of your vassal (the heir you invited). Win obviously and profit, holy orders are your vassals now and you can just raise them (unless they are fighting somewhere) to fight for you. Check your intrigue decisions.
I've seen decisions to expel the holy orders (which gives you their baronies) and to vassalize them. I'm not sure under what conditions those appear though. The reason why they won't accept an offer of vassalization is because you're 'not my de jure liege.' But you can make them your de jure vassal by giving them a county or duchy that is de jure part of your realm.
Crusader Kings 2 Holy Orders
Make sure you don't give them one that's outside of your de jure realm. So if you're Rome, most likely the de jure territory of your empire is Greece, so give them something in Greece. Afterwards, they are now your de jure vassal and they will accept the offer.
There are triggers for the holy orders. First, crusades need to be unlocked. This can happen after the year 1090 or earlier but not before 900, if certain conditions are met, such as Aquitaine falling to Mulsims as mentioned above. It works the same for jihads.Once crusades are unlocked, the holy orders have triggers to appear, different for each order. For example, for the Knights Templar the year must be at least 1118 or earlier if the title holder of the Byzantine Emperor is not Christian or any one of the counties of Constantinople, Athens, Ancyra, Corinth or Rome is not owned by a Christian. Each of the holy orders have triggers which can make them appear sooner than the regular date, like 1118 for the Templars. Without those triggers, the earliest holy order to appear after crusades are unlocked will be the Hospitallers in 1113, so you just need to wait another year and they'll appear. Earlier, of course if the county conquest trigger is met.The link below contains a list of the holy orders for crusades and jihads and the extra orders released with Sons of Abraham and the triggers/normal time for each.
